A Huge Problem to a Sane World

2024

Copperplate facsimile of ‘Zebra’ by Antonio Tempesta, 1630. Brass picture hook, label holder, and nameplate. Picture cord tied in a Hackamoor knot.

This copperplate print represents a game of colonial hearsay, where the Italian artist represents a Congolese Zebra as a racehorse striped like a candycane.

I have titled this piece with a quotation from Helen Joyce in the UK, who said that every single transgender person, “whether happy or not” poses “a huge problem to a sane world.”
